Do you remember the old fable about the farmer who had a goose that laid golden eggs?

The farmer was happy about this good fortune but wanted more eggs faster. In his short-sighted frustration, the farmer cut off the head of the goose to reach inside so he could get all the golden eggs at once. Of course, this deprived him of fortune in the future.

At work, we can be a lot like the farmer. Sometimes, we make decisions based on speed, deadlines, and business needs without calculating the long term impacts on the very resource that creates success and profit…..our people.

One enduring truth is that in order to produce or cultivate “golden eggs” in our organizations, we must take a long view of:

• improving processes
• managing change
• building strong, trusting teams
• identifying the root cause of problems and implementing clear, effective solutions
